A Local's Guide on What it's Like Living in Gladstone Oregon

Gladstone Oregon

What is Living in Gladstone Oregon Like?

Gladstone, Oregon, in Clackamas county, is 10 miles from Portland, Oregon.  Several Indian groups originally inhabited Gladstone. The first settlers of the area arrived in the 1840s. The city was founded in the late 1800s by Judge Harvey Cross. It was named in honor of William E. Gladstone, the Prime Minister of England. Gladstone was incorporated on January 10, 1911. Aaron Hayes Mulkey established the first church in the area in 1908.

Gladstone offers easy access to the Mary S. Young State Recreation Area, the Tryon Creek State Natural Area, and the Molalla River State Park. Some popular local historical sites include the Portland Children's Museum, Harlow House Museum, Rail Depot Museum, Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, and the American Advertising Museum. The Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, George W Joseph State Natural Area, and the Rooster Rock State Park are also in the neighborhood.

Gladstone may fly under the radar in cities surrounding Portland, but that only adds to its appeal and charm. Gladstone residents love their city; even as it has grown, it maintains its authentic connection to its small-town feel and family-friendly identity. The Mainstreet district is filled with locally-owned restaurants and shops. It also hosts fun community events throughout the year. Gladstone also benefits from being right at the confluence of the Clackamas and Willamette rivers. The city takes full advantage of the location, with nearly a dozen parks along the river banks offering a wide array of recreational opportunities.
