Dallas is Polk County's county seat, founded on December 22, 1845. Before adopting its present name, the city was known as Cynthia Ann or Cynthian. It was named after Vice President George Mifflin Dallas. This area had its first settlers in 1845 and was incorporated in 1874. The first train ran between Dallas and Falls City in May of 1903.  Dallas is along Rickreall Creek, about 15 miles (24 km) west of Salem, at an elevation of 325 feet (99 m) above sea level. It is part of the Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. 

Dallas and the surrounding areas offer a good variety of recreation opportunities. The city has numerous parks, like Dallas City Park, Birch Street Park, Kingsborough Park, and Willamette Mission State Park. The Evergreen Aviation Museum and the Mission Mill Museum are also located near Dallas. Tourists can also visit the Enchanted Forest, the Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge, and the Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge while in Dallas.
